We love dogs, especially rowing club dogs, because we have a shared love of water, rowing and clubhouses! When you row out of your club’s boathouse or if you have been to other clubs, you know that dogs can be a welcome presence for club rowers and visitors.

Not only that. They can reduce pre-competition stress levels for athletes and even help with training. Some of the rowing club dogs we feature definitely do that.

How Athletes Are Using Dogs to up Their Mental Game

We’d like to share pics of some of our favourite boathouse dogs and where they can be found. Please tell us about your dogs too either through a story or pic of them.

Liesel, a West Highland Terrier featured on our cover shot, presides at the Murray Bridge Rowing Club in South Australia.

German Shepherd Casimir vom Schlossfelsen, is pictured here being smothered by love from the Ohio State’s rowing crew. He belongs to the coach of the team and has his own Instagram account @casimir_gsd.

Captain Golden, who is a lot bigger now, is pictured here as an adorable puppy getting love from the Oakland Strokes Rowing Club.

Here’s a video of Justin, so named because he was rescued just in time. He shows up to help out Coach Ryan Demaine at Headington School Oxford Boat Club and glories in the awards with the team.

Another guest coaching gig here with Diesel, who is keeping a close eye on her charges on the Syracuse University Women’s Rowing team.

Some dogs are not content with just laying around and looking good. Others really want to learn the basics, like Bailey here with the Saint Joseph Academy Crew in Cleveland, Ohio. Not surprisingly, Bailey has friends and his own Instagram account @boathouse_bailey.

Rocking some cool products for dogs on or near the water, here’s Peanut, oft seen on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia with person Katie Lane.

And from Marin Country Association we bring you this cute pooch who belongs to Jane.

Form is just as important for rowing club dogs as it is for rowers and Chewy, Coach Carol’s dog at Row New York knows what that’s about.

We can’t forget Jackina at Canottieri Luino, who sometimes accompanies our Lago Maggiore rowing tour. She inspired our blog post Non-Rowers Welcome since it is impossible to keep her out of a rowing shell.

Australia based Michael Heaton-Harris shared photos of his fluffy buddy Benji, accompanying him on daily rowing strolls and races. How cute is this!

Michael says:

I got my dog Benji as a pup in Christmas 2009, and from the day I got him I started taking him with me in the boat and he would either sit on my feet or in the footwell behind my rigger. I raced the 2010 Herald Shield sculling series which is a 2km handicap race, raced once a week for 6 weeks with points for each weeks results. Benji and I won it, so his and my name is on the Herald Shield which has been going for around 100 yrs. Every winter. I was rowing with Lake Colac Rowing Club when we won that. He and I have also raced at the Australian Masters Games in 2010 and he has 2 silver medals from that, 1 in the double and 1 with me in the single.
